Product Overview
Transit vehicle operations are characterized by frequent
rapid starts and stops. In wooded areas, wheels can slide
on accumulated leaves and develop flat spots. These flat
spots degrade ride quality and generate excessive noise
while damaging rails, ties, ballast, and suspension
components including springs, frames and bearings.
Unfortunately, standard industry approaches to flat
spot detection lack the sensitivity to support transit
operations.
The IEM approach to flat spot detection uses an
array of accelerometers to measure the vibrations
induced into the track by the passing wheels. The
FSDS-6300 allows for the low-speed detection of
much smaller flat spots than can be identified by
traditional approaches based on strain gauges.
At speeds of at least 15kmh, all flats over 6.5mm
touching the rail will be detected.
